The Bensenville Park District is encouraging adults to refresh their driving knowledge and sharpen their safety skills by registering for the AARP Smart Driver Course, scheduled for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Thursday and Friday, July 9-10, at the Deer Grove Leisure Center, 1000 W. Wood St., Bensenville.
Designed for drivers ages 21 and older, the AARP Smart Driver Course provides participants with research-based defensive driving strategies and a review of current rules of the road. The program also addresses age-related physical and cognitive changes that can affect driving and includes the latest Illinois-specific driving updates.
Defensive driving techniques taught in the course include managing speed, anticipating the actions of other drivers, staying alert and distraction-free, maintaining a safe following distance, and adjusting driving habits to road and weather conditions.
"The AARP Smart Driver Course is a valuable opportunity for adults to build confidence behind the wheel while learning practical strategies that can help keep themselves and others safe," said Nicole Branscum, who oversees the Bensenville Park District's Young at Heart program. "Whether participants have been driving for decades or simply want a refresher on current laws and safety practices, this course provides useful information they can apply every day."
Participants will also learn about modern vehicle safety features, crash reporting procedures and techniques for adapting to changes that can occur with aging. Individuals who successfully complete the course may be eligible for a multi-year automobile insurance discount. Participants should contact their insurance provider for specific eligibility requirements.
The course will be held in the Oak Room at the Deer Grove Leisure Center. The fee is $25 per person or $20 for AARP members, payable directly to AARP on the first day of class.
Advance registration is required. For more information or to register, visit the Deer Grove Leisure Center, 1000 W. Wood St., Bensenville, or call 630-766-7015.
