Park district offers free activities for veterans this summer

Posted

The Bensenville Park District is honoring local veterans throughout the summer with a series of free events and wellness opportunities designed to recognize military service while encouraging recreation, camaraderie and community.

The annual Veterans Golf Outing will return to White Pines Golf Club from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 29, offering veterans and one guest a complimentary day of golf, lunch and fellowship. Veterans residing within park district boundaries are invited to enjoy nine holes of golf, access to the driving range and putting course, and a lunch buffet at 37 Bar & Grill from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. A short game clinic will also be offered at noon for participants looking to sharpen their skills.

Veterans who prefer not to golf are still encouraged to attend and enjoy the social atmosphere, lunch and practice facilities. Proof of residency and military service may be required. Space is limited. Early registration is available for residents living within park district boundaries, while out-of-district registration begins June 8. To register, call the White Pines Pro Shop at 630-766-0304.

New this year, the park district is introducing free veterans golf lessons at White Pines Golf Club. Designed specifically for veterans of all experience levels, the one-hour group lessons provide a supportive environment for beginners learning the fundamentals and experienced golfers refining their swing, short game and confidence on the course. Lessons will be offered at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 11. Registration is available through the White Pines Pro Shop.

Veterans also will receive complimentary admission to Bensenville Water Park & Splash Pad from noon to 5 p.m. on July 4 during the park district’s annual Veterans Swim Free event. The patriotic celebration includes music throughout the day and special recognition of veterans in attendance. Proof of military service may be required.

Additional programming continues Aug. 15 with the free Fitness Dayz Boot Camp and Veterans Brunch at Varble Park and the adjacent Kiwanis Shelter. The event includes a boot camp workout from 9 to 10 a.m. followed by a veterans’ pot luck brunch. Sign up through NEDSRA.

Veterans also can participate year-round in the Healthy Minds Healthy Bodies program at Wood St. Fitness. The nationally recognized program provides qualified veterans with free fitness center memberships, personal training sessions, peer support opportunities and access to adaptive fitness experiences. Participating facilities and fitness professionals complete specialized training focused on veteran culture, PTSD, military sexual trauma, service-related injuries and adaptive equipment.

Area veterans are invited to celebrate Veterans Day at the White Pines Veterans Day Breakfast from 9-11 a.m. Nov. 11.
